The Chakra System
Chakra is a Sanskrit word meaning "wheel" or "disk" In the energetic body, chakras are often described as spinning wheels or vortexes of energy.
These centres correspond with different physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of our being, influencing how we feel, relate and experience life.
Although chakras are not visible to the human eye...
many sensitive or intuitive people can perceive them though heightened states of awareness, such as during Reiki, meditation, breathwork or through clairvoyant or clairsentient abilities.
Below, you'll find a breakdown or each chakra, how it affetcs you, what it feels like when its out of balance and how to support it.
7 Chakras
There are 7 main chakras in the body, starting at the base of the spine and moving upward to the crown of the head.
When energy flows freely through these centres we often feel balanced, aligned and connected. When energy becomes blocked or excessive, we may experience we may experience discomfort, emotional patterns or physical tension.
Root Chakra
Location: Base of spine
Element: Earth
Colour: Red
Theme: Safety, stability, grounding, survival
Balanced Root: You will feel secure, grounded, safe in your body, and able to meet your basic needs.
Out of Balance:
Emotionally: Anxiety, fear, restlessness, insecurity
Physically: Tired legs, lower back pain, issues with feet, hips, bowels
Energetically: Disconnected, unstable, floaty, survival mode mindset.
Signs of Blockage: Struggles with money, trust issues, feeling unsupported, overthinking, worst case scenarios.
How can you support your Root Chakra?
- Walk barefoot on the earth
- Eat grounding foods, (root veg)
- Wear or visualise the colour red
- Practice breathwork, yoga & tai chi
- Use affirmations such as "I am safe. I am supported, I am grounded"
Sacral Chakra
Location: Below the navel
Element: Water
Colour: Orange
Theme: Emotions, creativity, pleasure, sensuality
Balanced Sacral: You express emotions freely, enjoy pleasure without guilt, feel creative and connected to others.
Out of Balance:
Emotionally: Mood swings, guilt, emotional suppression.
Physically: Reproductive issues, lower back pain, bladder or pelvic tension.
Energetically: Feeling numb, disconnected from joy or sexuality.
Signs of Blockage: Difficulty feeling pleasure, creative blocks. sexual shame or repression, co-dependence.
How can you support your Sacral Chakra?
- Dance, swim or move fluidly
- Creative expression (art, music writing)
- Spend time near water
- Eat orange foods such as mango, carrots and sweet potato
- Affirm "I am deserving of pleasure" "I am creative" "I honour my emotions"
Solar Plexus Chakra
Location: Upper abdomen (just below the ribs)
Element: Fire
Colour: Yellow
Theme: Confidence, personal power, boundaries, motivation.
Balanced Solar Plexus: You will feel confident, can set healthy boundaries, take action, trust your instincts.
Out of Balance:
Emotionally: Self doubt, low confidence, anger or control issues.
Physically: Digestive issues, ulcers, liver problems.
Energetically: Lack of motivation, people pleasing, indecisiveness.
Signs of Blockage: Procrastination, fear of judgement, feeling powerless or overly controlling.
How can you support your Solar Plexus Chakra?
- Sit in the sun or use heat therapy
- practise saying no
- Do core strengthening exercises
- Eat yellow foods (banana, turmeric)
- Use affirmations such as "I am confident. I am enough, I stand in my power"
Heart Chakra
Location: The centre of your chest
Element: Air
Colour: Green (sometimes pink)
Theme: Love, compassion, forgiveness, connection.
Balanced Root: You will feel connected to yourself and others, you forgive easily, and give and receive love openly.
Out of Balance:
Emotionally: Loneliness, jealousy, resentment and grief
Physically: Chest tightness, heart/lung issues, upper back pain.
Energetically: Closed off, overly giving, unable to receive.
Signs of Blockage: Fear of intimacy, heartbreak, holding onto old pain, co dependency.
How can you support your Heart Chakra?
- Spend time with loved ones or pets
- Practise self love or mirror work
- Deep breathing exercises
- Eat green foods
- Use affirmations such as "I give and receive love freely. I forgive, I am loved"
Throat Chakra
Location: Throat
Element: Ether (space)
Colour: Blue
Theme: Communication, expression, truth listening.
Balanced Throat: You will feel able to express yourself freely, clearly and truthfully. You will be able to listen well, and speak with confidence.
Out of Balance:
Emotionally: Shyness, fear of speaking up, dishonesty
Physically: Sore throat, thyroid issues, neck or jaw tension
Energetically: Feeling unheard or misunderstood
Signs of Blockage: Over explaining, fear of public speaking, saying yes when you mean no.
How can you support your Throat Chakra?
- Sing, hum, chant
- Practise honest communication
- Journaling or speaking aloud to yourself
- Drink herbal teas and stay hydrated
- Use affirmations such as "I speak my truth with clarity. My voice matters"
Third Eye Chakra
Location: Between the eyebrows
Element: Light
Colour: Indigo
Theme: Intuition, insight, vision, clarity
Balanced Root: You will trust your intuition, see beyond surface situations, and feel connected to your inner knowing.
Out of Balance:
Emotionally: Overthinking, confusion, disconnection from intuition
Physically: Headaches, eye strain, insomnia
Energetically: Difficulty trusting your gut, doubting your path
Signs of Blockage: Closed mind, nightmares, ignoring inner nudges.
How can you support your Third Eye Chakra?
- Meditation or visualisation
- Keep a dream journal
- Reduce screen time
- Work with crystals such as amethyst
- Use affirmations such as "I trust my intuition, I see clearly, I am guided".
Crown Chakra
Location: Top of the head
Element: Divine Energy
Colour: Violet or White
Theme: Spiritual connection, purpose, oneness, awakening.
Balanced Crown Chakra: You will connected to something bigger than yourself, whether that's spirit, source or universal energy.
Out of Balance:
Emotionally: Isolation, cynicism, spiritual disconnection
Physically: Migraines, dizziness, sensitivity to light and sounds
Energetically: Feeling "cut off" from purpose, apathy. overthinking
Signs of Blockage: Lack of meaning, feeling stuck spiritually, fear of the unknown
